Wisconsin Is In The Political Spotlight: The Question Is Why?

Even after the 2023 state Supreme Court election, there is a lot to unfold politically.

April 20, 2023

The 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court election, which featured conservative Daniel Kelly and liberal Janet Protasiewicz captured the national attention and a record amount of spending. Protasiewicz, a former Milwaukee County judge, took the election by 11%.

The voting scales had extreme partisan gaps, where in Madison, Kelly received 27%, where Protasiewicz had 73%. In Milwaukee Kelly had 18% and Protasiewicz had 82% of the total votes.

Ads, Spending, and Gerrymandering

During the months prior to the election, Wisconsin residents were overwhelmed with radio and television ads for this election. There have been estimates between $29 million to $40 million spent on advertising alone. Some argue that it isn’t worth it; if people know who they are going to vote for, these ads won’t change anything. Some say that the ads have the power to sway voters. Wisconsin is a gerrymandering state, which is currently set to favor the Republican Party. That adds to the excitement of the win for Protasiewicz.

Janet Protasiewicz was in an interview by WISN 12 News on “The Truth Behind Ad Spending” where she discussed the spending, her background and much more.

The Abortion Issue

Kelly is anti-abortion, while Janet Protasiewicz is protecting women’s right to choose. The history with abortion rights in Wisconsin goes back to 1849, where a law was passed to make it a felony to have or perform an abortion, unless the mothers life is at risk. There were revisions made in 1858 to lessen the penalties for anyone who performed an abortion, and the current policy is that abortions are only allowed if the mothers life is at risk. There are no laws saying you cannot leave the state to get an abortion, but Wisconsin is not going to allow it unless your life is at risk. There is a major impact with this election because of the issue of abortion, especially after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in recent years.

A Marquette University professor, Paul Nolette, said “‘This is, without a question, one of the most important races for the issue of abortion that’s happening across the entire country.’”  He made this comment in an article by WUWM, Milwaukee, about why the Supreme Court election in Wisconsin is as important as we know it to be.

Dan Kelly and Student Comments

In all the political drama going on, Dan Kelly has made some negative comments about Protasiewicz, and added a warning to the state. These statements include “I wish Wisconsin the best of luck, because I think it’s going to need it” and that he didn’t have a worthy opponent.

A high school student, who will remain anonymous, agrees with Protasiewicz’s political views and they do not agree with Dan Kelly’s ideals.  When asked about Dan Kelly’s statements, they replied with “he is a sore loser.”

Within these comments, redistricting and abortion rights were some of the topics, because Kelly and Protasiewicz’s views do not align.

In The End…

Janet Protasiewicz will take office August 1st, of 2023 and will hold office until 2033.

In this 10 years of her career, we as the state of Wisconsin will see what changes will be made, and as a state it is fair to say we hope things change for the better.
