The Abortion Issue

May 4, 2023

Kelly is anti-abortion, while Janet Protasiewicz is protecting women’s right to choose. The history with abortion rights in Wisconsin goes back to 1849, where a law was passed to make it a felony to have or perform an abortion, unless the mothers life is at risk. There were revisions made in 1858 to lessen the penalties for anyone who performed an abortion, and the current policy is that abortions are only allowed if the mothers life is at risk. There are no laws saying you cannot leave the state to get an abortion, but Wisconsin is not going to allow it unless your life is at risk. There is a major impact with this election because of the issue of abortion, especially after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in recent years.

A Marquette University professor, Paul Nolette, said “‘This is, without a question, one of the most important races for the issue of abortion that’s happening across the entire country.’”  He made this comment in an article by WUWM, Milwaukee, about why the Supreme Court election in Wisconsin is as important as we know it to be.
